Heuristic method(Heuristics) experience based techniques that help in problem solving, learning and discovery. In more precise terms, heuristics stand for strategies using readily accessible, through loosely applicable, information to control problem solving in human beings and machines. Etymology for this word would originate from eureka which was an exclamation when Archimedes found an algorithm he had been bathing. I think the most fundamental heuristics is so called trial and error which can be used in everything from matching bolts to bicycle to finding the values of variables in algebra problems.
