Newton and Playing on the Seashore with Pretty Shells

"I do not know what I may appear to the world, but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me."

Since I initially came across with this memorable verbatim quote which had been commonly  attributed to Isaac Newton, but I was not fervently convinced that Newton actually had said it as It does not appear in his entire writings. In fact, I was fascinated by the remarkable grammatical structure and extremely skilled writing techniques.

However, it seems it did not come up in print until a collection by Rev. Joseph Spence , Anecdotes, Observations and Characters, of Books and Men, after his death. Whatever the truth may be concerning a private conversation, it is, of course, lost in time. Nevertheless, it remains an engaging description of Newton, as he regarded himself as only on the shore of a great ocean of truth. That insight certainly remains valid, for he could never have envisioned the atomic structure of matter, quantum theory and discoveries of the universe made by giant telescopes, space probes, and so much more.

There is also an apocryphal story that Newton being inspired by watching an apple fall. Another tells of Diamond, a dog that knocked over a candle on Newton's desk, and burned up a substantial manuscript. Those modern myths still live on. Perhaps the “playing with pebbles” sentiment might be also fabricated, no doubt in reverence to the passing of the genius. But, who knows? Yeah right.

Spam Sushi

This afternoon we made a fusion style bento of Spam sushi. Although I don't think Spam as an ideal source of protein, it truly goes well with rice. It certainly has that soft texture that is familiar with, as well as the expected the rich and savory porky flavour.

Although it's not the most popular among  Auckland volcanic cones, but the view of Stone fields housing development is truly stunning.

However going down the winding and steep path is not highly recommended. Yeah right.

Genius System

When I was a poor lawschool student. I found there was a constant demand for a pen to borrow, often not returned. I hit on the idea of a trade system. I swapped my pen for their cellphone. Never lost another pen again. So far so good.

Scary Hair-rinsing

The recent threats from North Korea prompted Guam's Office of Civil Defence to issue guidelines on what people should do in the event of a nuclear emergency. It included the advice that we should wash our hair with shampoo or soap, we you shouldn't use "conditioner because it will bind radioactive material to your hair".

Courier Blues

While ago, I sent some tax documents by overnight courier to an office in Wellington. When I could see that it hadn't been delivered the next day, I phoned, the first of 8 times to the 0800 number, and was told:

• It would be delivered the next day.
• It couldn't be delivered because there was no access to the property.
• It couldn't be delivered because there was a yellow line road marking on the road outside the house.
• It couldn't be delivered because there are roadworks in the street.
• It would be returned to me.
• It would actually be delivered to the original address.
• It is on hold.

It finally arrived after 7 days, for an overnight delivery.

The True of Cinderella Story

Fairytales were much more gruesome before Disney romanticised them. Here's how Cinderella was originally written. "In the modern Cinderella fairytale we have the beautiful Cinderella swept off her feet by the prince and her wicked step-sisters marrying two lords - with everyone living happily ever after. The fairytale has its origins back in the 1st century BC where Strabo's heroine was actually called Rhodopis, not Cinderella. The story was similar to the modern one with the exception of the glass slippers and pumpkin coach. But, lurking behind the pretty tale is a more sinister variation by the Grimm brothers: the nasty step-sisters cut off parts of their own feet in order to fit them into the slipper, hoping to fool the prince. The prince is alerted to the trickery by two pigeons who peck out the step-sisters' eyes. They end up spending the rest of their lives as blind beggars while Cinderella gets to lounge about in luxury at the prince's castle.

Inevitable Sequel?

goo.gl/aM8cNt

On Mitchelson Street between Ellerslie Racecourse and the Southern Motorway, a line of mature trees was planted under power lines. They grew and of course gradually began covering the lines, so were regularly pruned over the years, no doubt weakening their structure. A short time ago professional tree removal experts took the trees away and ground out the trunks. Absolutely unbelievably, a new line of trees has been planted in the same place below the electric power lines.

Life and Death

http://thewireless.co.nz/articles/knock-knock-how-the-news-media-turns-corpses-into-content

In the business of death news, a reporter has to go and knock on the door of the family of someone recently deceased (usually horribly), and try and get information out of a grieving family. I doubt it really is a plum job.
