The Miracles of Freedom by Chris Stewart and Ted Stewart

I think Ted and Chris Stewart's book makes several essential points. Our present position in world history is not inevitable: It could have gone in a completely different direction, not only at the seven tipping points they choose, but at countless other forks in history, great and small. And the freedom that westerners enjoy at the present time is a rare situation in world history and might not last.

This book emphasises the priceless gift we enjoy and the care which all of us have to exercise in order to preserve it: "The price of liberty is eternal vigilance". My only objection is that the Stewarts, particularly in one chapter, accept uncritically what I would call the classic protestant view of the state of the Catholic Church just before the Reformation. But with that exception, its an informative and readable book which also gives a good overview of history.
