Mental Time Travel

I think this notion of mental time travel tells me it would be right to try to keep Santa alive for our kids. It never ceases to amaze me how even apparently intelligent and scientifically-trained people can forget that true wonder is just as easy to find in the real natural world of butterflies, flowers, nebulae, and spiral galaxies without requiring our children to believe in manufactured illusions. I regularly work with children by volunteering in the school and occasionally they will ask me my views on various subjects of interest to them. Several years back around Christmas time one little girl asked me a fairly common question i.e. if Santa Claus was real. In my most non-committal fashion I turned the question around and asked her what she thought. She paused for a second, and then said that she didn't think so, however, because a number of her presents were always labelled "From Santa", she wasn't about to let-on, any time soon. I believe children are smarter than many adults often suspect. Yeah right.
