This new traffic island has been dropped into Beaumont St, Ponsonby while ago. I've asked Council and Auckland Transport to explain why it's built, what they hoped to achieve with it. No answer as yet . I've browsed a bit around internet and can see the reason for the island now, i.e. to ensure cars and other vehicles take a wider entry into the left-hand turn of the street to the left. Perhaps vehicles kept getting stuck or ruined tyres on the kerbing.
